Ghosts of the Dead

Grief, hoplessness and bewilderment are the emotions that you would expect Cambodians to be experiencing after the tragedy. And they are.

But some of them are also frightened long after the stampede is over.

Why? They can see the ghosts of the dead in the streets, they say. Our suburban street was empty of kids all day yesterday; parents kept them inside because some were shaking with fright. It's not just the young ones though; some of my adult students admitted a similar fear.

  1. It gave me goosebumps when my students also mentioned this.

Offerings of bananas, rice, a glass of water, two candles and three incense sticks were placed outside homes throughout Phnom Penh. This, my students said, was to keep the ghosts from entering the house and taking another soul.

Difficult to get going on the next grammar point after such chilling thoughts.
