Tonle Sap: Touchdown

By air the meandering Tonle Sap river is the most obvious sign that one is flying over Cambodia and approaching Phnom Penh airport.

Fishing this mighty river provides a staggering 60% of the total protein intake of all Cambodians and provides a living- of various levels- to more than 3 million people.

Nutrient-rich the sediment provides a natural fertilizer to much of inland Cambodia. Once the rainy-season has swelled the Tonle Sap Lake to capacity, the flow of the river actually reverses,
carrying both fish and sediment downstream.

Tonle Sap means 'Large Fresh Water River' in Khmer. The photo was snapped by Ann, as she and Vanna T. Cat, prepared for landing.
