My Average Child

Beer, Film, Boss, Bank, Golf, Save and Game they are all popular English language nicknames for Thai boys.

It’s not difficult to see why those names were chosen; clearly, whoever chose Beer, has a fondness for beer; Film’s folk love the movies; Boss’s brood likes authority; Bank’s blood worship cash, and Save’s does too; Golf’s group like to play nine holes; and around Game’s generation there is someone who loves leisure time.

That’s easy to understand. Also easy are Nap, Best, Bright, Sun and Benz (the Mercedes is the car in Thailand) and, umm, Ham and Milk.
And of course Big was a fat baby and Boy’s a boy.

There are macho-names, too; Spy, Boom and Ninja; the hopeful names, Gain, Got and Bloom and; the wildly optimistic name, God!
And then there is Arm. What was his family thinking? After all there isn’t a Foot, Finger or Hand, although to be fair I have met a Palm.

Finally comes- Mean. No, his parents didn’t want a nasty child. Mean was chosen because Mum and Dad love mathematics and wanted a name to reflect that. OK, fair enough, but are they really hoping that their child turns out average?
