Liquor Law Lunacy

Need to buy a bottle of your favourite tipple in Thailand? No problem it's available in supermarkets, 7-elevens and in the little corner store just down the road.

Well there is one little problem, actually. You can't legally buy alcohol from off-licences between 9.00am and 11.00 am. Or between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. Daft, huh? And sometimes damn annoying.

There are ways around it though; you can buy alcohol in quantities of 10 litres or more at any time of the day, or, if the staff know you well enough at the local 7-eleven they might slip you a bottle. What about the little store in the village? They will always sell you a bottle or two. And for the truly desparate there is the brewed-in-the-bathtub bootleg-whiskey; that's available at any time.

Supposedly the law is to curb excessive drinking. Hmm... so let me see, you can't buy one small bottle of Chang beer at 4 in the afternoon but you can buy a dozen Singha, 3 bottles of wine, 2 alco-pops and a big bottle of whiskey at ten in the morning so long as those purchases combined make more than 10 litres of grog. Yeah, that sounds like it will work!
