Monitor Lizard, Lumpini Park, Bangkok

The Varanus salvator or Asian water monitor lizard can be seen by the dozen in Bangkok's central Lumpini park.

Theoretically they could harm a small child but there hasn't been a single recorded incident of lizard aggression in the park; they'd rather plonk into the water and glide away than get too close to humans.

When even a short stroll is sure to include a sighting of these magnificent creatures, Lumpini park is worth a visit.
