Between 1889 and 1897 Phnom Penh boomed and in a mere 8 years the population doubled, according to writer Michel Igout.
In 1897 Phnom Penh's 50,000 citizens were made up of 16,000 Khmer, 4,000 Vietnamese, 400 French, and an astonishingly large number, 22,000, Chinese.
