Slightly Interesting Cambodian Facts (7) Gambling

Boxing is the Sport of Choice for most Cambodian gamblers.

It is illegal for Cambodians to gamble within the kingdom.

Those caught are liable to a fine of between 10,000 riel ($2.50) and 50,000 riel ($12.50) or a prison term of between one week and one month.

Such fines don't deter the hordes of men found openly and madly waving wads of cash in one of any number of Cambodian coffee shops as they bet on local and Thai boxing matches.

Of course the 'fine' is paid; the coffee shop owners pay off the coppers to ensure their customers gamble unmolested by the local plod.
