Koh Pich Stampede: 2nd Anniversary

It was the second anniversary of Phnom Penh's Koh Pich (Diamond Island) stampede that killed 353 people, yesterday.

The stampede occurred when some of the Khmer water festival party-goers, trapped in a crowd of many thousands trying to cross the the Koh Pich bridge from both directions, panicked.

Despite local media reports that the panic was caused by the use of police water cannons and of reports of lax, often non-existent, security, a government inquiry/cover-up found that the municipal authorities in charge of the event were not at fault.

The second anniversary of the disaster has been largely ignored by both central and local governments.
