Cigarette Cache Cuts Cambodian Growers Cash

With some cigarettes costing a lot less than a dollar a packet in Cambodia it's hard to see that there would be money to be made from smuggling tobacco into the country.

But money to be made, there is. In fact, British American Tobacco estimate that smuggled tobacco accounts for nearly one-half of the industry's $30 million profit.

The hit that locally produced leaf takes from the smuggled stuff has meant both Cambodian tobacco farmers and seasonal workers have been cut by half this year.
