YOU!

“You!” shouts the tuk-tuk driver in the hope of a fare.

“You!” calls the lady who wants an outrageous 5 baht for using the toilets.

“You!” cries the street beggar, hands outstretched.

“You!” yahoo the boys on motorcycles as they zip past.

Infuriating, amusing and often annoying depending on the mood I had forgotten about the Thais use of ‘You’ to gain the attention of foreigners.

“You!” shouted the woman with a small child in tow, at Thailand’s Phimai Historical Park. “You!” she calls again, pointing.

Oops, I was about to stand on a four foot, green snake. Saved by a “You!” What a wonderful word is You!

  1. "You"...followed closely by "Where you go?"

  2. Oh my, "Where you go?" That's ingrained both here in Cambodia and in Thailand.

I remember on more than one occasion giving a lesson on "Where are you going?" with seemingly great success. Except ten minutes later, outside of class, the same students would see me and cheerfully ask, "Teacher, where you go?"
