Turning Japanese

More than 35,000 Japanese live in Bangkok and most have settled near the centre of the city in the Thong Lo area. Here there can be found an abundance of eateries catering almost exclusively to ex-pats and the tens-of-thousands of Japanese tourists who pour into Thailand. Also easily found are Japanese grocery stores and DVD rental outlets which carry the latest Nippon movie releases. And of course there are a myriad of Karaoke bars to fill the demand for this most popular but often excruciating Japanese pastime.

While little-Nippon is minute when compared to Bangkok’s bustling Chinatown, it’s a vibrant and interesting part of Bangkok that adds a much needed cosmopolitan feel to the city.
