Breakfast Joak

One tasty breakfast in Thailand is joak a thick porridge-like rice soup.

A lady in our soi makes a good version of it- it isn't the best joak I've tasted- that's an award that belongs to a lovely Thai-Chinese couple who made us most welcome when we were staying a while in Bangkok's Wong Wien Yai district-but still it is a great start to the day.

Creamy and thick after many hours of cooking joak contains diced spring onions, bamboo strips, minced pork balls, and liver and kidney 'bits.' All very good for you. An egg can be added if you wish, that's a definite for me; it's just cracked in at the end and quickly cooks when stirred into the soup.

It's then carefully scooped it into a aluminium cup which has been lined with a plastic bag which allows for an easy take-away.

It's my favourite!
