Som-oh, or Pomelo as it's called in the West, can be seen everywhere in Thailand. It's a big citrus fruit that can grow almost as big as a football, although much of that size is made up of its lime-green skin and a thick pith. It is quite a job to prepare the damn things so we buy them peeled and snack on them as often as we can -they are delicious. Inside they look a lot like a grapefruit with a similar taste, although they are neither sour nor bitter. And the one big plus for the pomelo is that they you can't make a mess when devouring them; the membranes of the fruit most helpfully stop the juice from squirting everywhere. Som-oh can sometimes be found in spicy Thai salad, it can give a lovely balance to a dish and, lucky us, it's available all-year-round.
